(A few minutes later I thought of checking finger circumferences again, as I had with Bill Macdonnel before the 47th session; see page 41. By then the sensation had receded a bit, but I obtained a measurement of 2 ½” for my second finger at 4:50. An hour later the circumference had shrunk a bit, to 2 ”. I feel there would have been a greater difference if I had taken a prompt first measurement.

(By 8:50 Jane was nervous as usual. Willy slept on the couch. I had paper tapes ready to check Jane’s finger circumferences if the occasion arose. Jane began dictating at 9 PM in a soft and low voice. her eyes darkened as usual and her pace was slow.)

[...] These strips I used as tapes to measure the circumferences of the third finger on both of our right hands. [...]

[...] The following night, 5/21, the same finger measured 2 ¼” at the same spot, for a difference in circumference of ”.

(My finger measured 2 ” above the middle knuckle; the following night it measured 2 ” at the same spot, for a difference in circumference of ”.

Now the circumference of these circles interlap and bisect each other. Nor are the dimensions of circumference or radius stationary in your terms, for they exist in value fulfillment rather than in space, and their measurements in terms of intensity rather than in inches or miles.

[...] The index finger of my right hand checked out at approximately the same circumference– 2 ”. My second finger, wherein I had been most strongly aware of the feeling of enlargement, had measured 2 ” at the time; its circumference now checked out at 2 ”, for a shrinkage of th of an inch.

[...] I then cut narrow strips of paper and had Bill measure and mark the circumference of each finger, planning to check these measurements when the sensation had passed. [...]

Now these eyes were actually means of telling not only the time but also the circumference of the earth. [...]
